On an extremely wet and miserable evening , Frank Healy Park inevitably failed a pitch inspection , however the Under 17 Cup Final was quickly re scheduled to Newmarket.
It was the favourites Bridge who enjoyed the early spell of possession however It was Avenue who hit the front from a quick counter attack finished to the net by Rory Lynam . Avenue in fact doubled their lead when their Goalkeeper Oisin O Rourke saw his kick sail over the Bridge Goalkeeper into the net . 2-0 became 3-0 when a Stephen Ogundare free kick hit the back of the net once again . Avenue were unlucky not to add a fourth goal right before half time when Leo Johnson saw his effort come off the post and Jason Keane Hayes saw his effort rattle the crossbar .
The favourites Bridge were always going to come out fighting for the second half especially when they had the wind and playing downhill . Again , Bridge were putting pressure on the Avenue defence but they could not seem to score through some last ditch defending from Avenue and some excellent goalkeeping from the Avenue net minder .
Bridge were rewarded a penalty after 69 mins when their player was deemed to be fouled inside the box . They duly converted the penalty and momentum started to swing in their favour . Bridge pulled a second goal back in added time from a set piece and were able to find an equaliser in the 98th minute from another set piece to send the game to extra time . With momentum with them , it was the favourites Bridge United who were able to score the winning goal in extra time and to crown themselves Under 17 Cup Champions for 2024. Heartbreak for the Avenue boys but they managed to go toe to toe with one of the top teams in the country and were only seconds away from winning the cup themselves . Great advertisement for grassroots ⚽️ in Clare .
